Being new in the 17th District, Officer Murphy was working with a veteran street officer. While traveling down Lawrence Ave., Officer Trevante pulled a quick U-turn, and soon they were stopping a young man in a wheelchair rolling down the sidewalk. Officer Trevante had his hand on his gun, so being aware, Murphy sensed something amiss. Reaching and grabbing the sitting gang member’s hand, Murph did likewise to his other hand. Officer Trevante reached under the blanket covering his legs and withdrew a pistol that the cripple was secluding. A quick search revealed numerous bags of reefer and powdered cocaine. Our wheelchair gang member was actively selling drugs and protecting himself with a loaded pistol. After securing him and placing him into the rear of the squad car, Officer Trevante and Murphy were going to the 17th District with a gang member who was shot and left paralyzed years earlier, who still hadn’t learned his lesson.
